If they taught history in school like this, we'd all know a lot more history. This book was a whim purchase, but super entertaining. It's surprisingly a page-turner. Also a great coffee-table book. Kudos to the author's research for finding stories that actually make you say "whoa, that's crazy"
Fun read
My daughter and I have a great time with this book. We would start the day by choosing a random page and reading out that day's fact.
I gave a copy to my brother in-law.
Truly entertaining and fascinating facts to ponder each and every day. We read it out loud at dinner every night!!
Gabe Henry's "What the Fact?" is a year-long whirlwind romp through history that will leave you impatient for his next book! Picking interesting facts and events from January 1 to December 31 from across the centuries, Henry's book is a well-written salad of both the randomness and connectedness of the human experience. For instance, two of the most significant events in the devlopment of aviation--Lindberg's first ever solo nonstop flight over the Atlantic in in 1927 and Amelia Earhart's second ever solo nonstop in 1932--were completed exactly five years apart on the same date, May 21. And exactly five years after that--May 21, 1937--Earhart took off on her first attempt at an around the world flight--and was never heard of again! Spooky? Yes. Fascinating? Yes! "What the Fact ?" is full of fascinating stories such as this as well as many funny ones such as the case of an English grandmother who spent so much money on driving lessons that when she did finally pass on August 3, 1970 she longer had enough money to buy a car! What the Fact? is a great gift for anyone who enjoys the quirks of history or just likes to laugh out loud!! I highly recommend it!!
True fact: wasting time is fun. And reading trivia books is one of the best ways to waste time. This hardcover alternative to looking at memes on the internet is going to be the finest thing you buy all year. The stories collected in this trivia almanac run the gamut from the genocide of French rabbits to the resurrection of Sherlock Holmes. It travels seamlessly from tales of vampires on the moon to notes about chickens on treadmills. You will laugh. You might cry, but that's probably more about where you are right now. And who doesn't love a good cry anyway? But then you will continue reading, and you will probably laugh again. If I have any criticism of this book, it's the author's glaring missed opportunity (in this reader's opinion) to coin the pun 'Tutu Shakur'. It's pretty much a perfect read otherwise. Get yourself a copy. Get one for everyone you know. Make this book your family Christmas card this year. It's prettier than your family anyway.
I never really write reviews since I read mostly classic lit but I was given this book as a gift and it is adorable. I have brought it in to work and now I read a funny fact/story to my coworkers every day! This book is so unique and well researched and full of amazing and almost unbelievable stories of "this day in history..." it always starts our day off in a good mood. When I am finished entertaining my coworkers I am going to keep it on my coffee table. I could definitely see a history teacher using this as an opener to each class but really anyone would love it.I do also think it's well written. Every once in a while the author comes up with a really beautiful turn of phrase. All in all this is a delightful little book that would be a well received gift for anyone.
