I gave this to my husband for his study abroad program in Egypt. He went to study Arabic, and Egyptian Arabic is different from standard Arabic, he tells me. I love the Lonely Planet phrasebooks because they are easy references - portable and informative. All the LP phrasebooks follow the same standard format. They include the basics (with English phonetic pronunciation) like numbers, foods, hotel issues, but also some fun phrases like pick up lines. This isn't a book for a language newbie, per se, but better used as a reference for someone with prior exposure. While words could be useful for newbies, the phrases wouldn't be useful at all.

An excellent book for the serious student of Egyptian Arabic. The only issue I had was the small type size. I'm 70 years old with failing eyesight. I would have preferred larger type (12 pt), even at the expense of leaving off some subject matter. This is much more than the casual tourist needs.

It's what you need to get around. Except for the inside cover whoopsie for key phrases, the book is very logical, good diversity of phrases for different situations. I often kept it in my pocket when studying in Arabic class, as decent travel-size dictionaries for Egyptian Arabic are hard to come by.

Since Egyptian TV was the main regional broadcast throughout the middle east, it was a common dialect that is somewhat understood most places. Like a lot of places, if you are traveling, the people you deal with know enough English that this is a good reference for quick and dirty communications. To practice pronunciation, reading isnt everything, practice is so important.

I own several Egyptian Arabic books but this is the most practical and useful one. It is so easy to pack along with you and relatively easy to find what you want although not perfect.I have used this for 3 years while living in Cairo and find it quite valuable in my everyday life.

this was my bible while visiting egypt. this book has been very well-used. was tremendously helpful.

Persistently, even when faced with evidence of the war's dreadful human toll, Helmut continues to spout the Fhrer's rhetoric. The Nazi bravado compensates for his physical shortcomings; at war's end, he is a hollow man. The next tale concerns the flight of a family of five bewildered children, led by Lore, the oldest girl, as they make their way after the Allied victory from Bavaria to their grandmother's house in Hamburg. Dependent on the charity of a fellow refugee (Tomas, a survivor of Buchenwald), the children are always on the verge of starving. After Tomas leads them to safety, Lore's gradual awareness of the Holocaust ages her beyond her years. Finally, in the last section, set in the late 1990s, a young German teacher named Micha digs into the hidden history of his dead grandfather's wartime activity, travels to Belarus to discover the truth of Opa's SS-Waffen deeds and must grapple with the new, terrifying information he unearths. Maczek presents here a short invitation to statistical chemical thermodynamics, showing how the partition functions due to various degrees of freedom of a molecule can be used to calculate thermodynamic properties and to predict the positions of chemical equilibria. It has some quirks, and whether or not it is a worthwhile purchase seems like an individual decision.First the good things. Maczek's primer is succinct, delivering ideas in bite-sized chunks, almost like an outline or set of lecture notes. Thus, it does not stretch the reader's attention span too much. Its overall brevity also enables one to read the entire book in a short period of time and have a reasonable taste of statistical thermodynamics. The parts of the book I enjoyed the most were the case studies on simple applications, which Maczek wove into the book as interstitial chapters between presentations of various partition functions. He used two-level theory to explain the Schottky anomaly in the heat capacity of solids and delivered a nice explanation of ortho- and para-hydrogen along with the rotational partition function. These chapters were gems, short but very satsisfying illustrations of the power of the theory.On the other hand, the book is quite limited. Its main caveat is that it assumes a full knowledge of classical thermodynamics, which I did not have when I read the book. To follow the treatment, one also needs a knowledge of basic quantum mechanics. It was a nice read and a manageable introduction, but I wonder whether it is more efficient simply to start with a more substantial book.
