My first exposure to the Tao Te Ching was the Stephen Mitchell translation on YouTube. I have since bought the Cleary translation with interpretation by Takuan Soho. Takuan Soho was a Zen monk during the late Azuchi–Momoyama period and early Edo period He provides a faithful, concise exposition that feels as accessible today as it would have in the 1600’s.

I have read several translations of the "Tao Te Ching". This one remains my favorite that I refer back to again and again. The translation of the Tao itself is very good and works well for me. But the real bonus is the Takuan Soho commentary. I found the commentary helpful and insightful. It was interesting to read the interpretation of someone 2000 years removed from the original author(s?) (not to mention 500 years before my time), and coming from a different intellectual tradition. I find this work very intellectually stimulating. Given the many interpretation/translations of the Tao that are out there, it behooves the reader to peruse several. Make this one of them.
Thomas Cleary, a translator of numerous classical Taoist and Zen Buddhist texts, has done those of us unable to read medieval Chinese a tremendous benefit with this translation. There are of course numerous translations of the Tao Te Ching, but where this one differs from most of the rest is that Cleary translate the commentary of 17th century Zen master Takuan Soho which brings much insight and understanding to the otherwise obscure and esoteric book of Lao-Tzu. For those who wish to delve deeper into this ancient spiritual classic, Cleary's translation of Soho's commentary, along with the original text, serves as an invaluable tool.
