One morning in March 1888, twelve-year-old Milton Daub awoke to find the world buried in snow. The blizzard was like nothing Milton and his neighbors in the Bronx had ever seen. No one dared go out into the storm. No one, that is, except Milton. He and his father made a pair of snowshoes from barrel hoops and old roller skates. Then Milton stepped bravely into the storm to buy milk for his family. Soon he was buying supplies for everyone in the area. His neighbors declared him a hero. The Blizzard of 1888 set records in the Northeast that are still unbroken. It forced whole cities to shut down for days. But Milton didn't let the snow stop him from helping neighbors in need. His true story is both an exciting adventure and a heartwarming glimpse of old New York.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-The Snow Walker by Margaret K. and Charles M. Wetterer (Carolrhoda, 1996) is read aloud by Larry Robinson. Set in the Bronx, New York, in 1888, it is the story of 12-year-old Milton Daub who ventures into a killer blizzard to bring food and medicine to his stranded neighbors. Walking on homemade snowshoes, Milton doesn't realize the dangers of his mission until it is almost too late. Only when he returns home to his frightened family does the boy know how lucky and how brave he has been. Based on an actual incident which has become a part of regional American folklore, this story is an excellent read-aloud choice, full of suspense and imagery. The narrator paces the reading well, and children will follow the story easily. Sound effects such as the crack of a falling branch, the barking of dogs, and the whistling wind are used sparingly but effectively. The page-turn signal is the sound of an actual page turning. Child readers will appreciate not only the read-aloud format but also the riveting story of a true yet unwitting hero of their own age. This will be a welcome addition to read-along collections in school and public libraries.

Gr. 2^-4. Although this nonfiction account has no chapter divisions, it will still find a ready audience among transitional readers. The Wetterers tell the uplifting story of 12-year-old Good Samaritan Milton Daub, who braved the terrible blizzard that hit the Northeast in March 1888 to bring supplies to his needy neighbors. Attractive, snow-filled scenes, contributed by artist Mary O'Keefe Young, give readers a glimpse of nineteenth-century New York as they chronicle Milton's trek on homemade snowshoes around his Bronx neighborhood, delivering groceries and medicines as he imagines himself an Alaskan dogsledder. With all the elements of good fiction, this heartwarming story brings history to life. Lauren Peterson
From Kirkus Reviews
Notes running before and after this true story inform beginning readers of the facts about the Blizzard of 1888, a three- day storm that ravaged the northeastern US. Milton Daub, 12, leaves his home in the South Bronx to buy milk, wearing the snowshoes he and his father have patched together from odds and ends around the house, with a picture from a geography book as a guide. As neighbors in need shout requests for groceries and medications to Milton from their snow-banked, second-story windows, the boy's mission grows. At day's end, he is not only able to turn his unasked-for profits over to his mother but has also saved a life. Wetterer (Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express) and her co-author craft a satisfying volume in the On My Own series, building suspense as the snowshoes disintegrate; Young's illustrations wonderfully evoke old New York City and the storm of a century.
