This was not however, a recounting of exotic ports and challenging passages. Rather, it described the horror of shipwreck and how six people in one tiny dinghy survived the perils of the open ocean for 38 days. Robertson's Survive the Savage Sea became a classic and ultimately Hollywood brought the story to the silver screen in 1992 with Robert Ulrich and Ali McGraw playing Robertson and his wife, Lyn. About the Author Douglas Robertson, eldest son of Linda and Dougal Robertson born 1954 and raised as a farmer's son before sailing with the family on the Lucette when he was 16. He went into the British Merchant Navy as a cadet, finally serving as Chief Officer. He left the sea in 1980 for a career in accountancy and lives with his family in London where he is also a qualified Tai Chi instructor.

About the Author

Dean R. Appling is the Lester J. Reed Professor of Biochemistry and the Associate Dean for Research and Facilities for the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught and done research for the past 29 years. Dean earned his B.S. in Biology from Texas A&M University (1977) and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University (1981). The Appling laboratory studies the organization and regulation of metabolic pathways in eukaryotes, focusing on folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism. The lab is particularly interested in understanding how one-carbon metabolism is organized in mitochondria, as these organelles are central players in many human diseases. In addition to coauthoring the 4th edition of Biochemistry, a textbook for majors and graduate students, Dean has published over 60 scientific papers and book chapters.

 

As much fun as writing a textbook might be, Dean would rather be outdoors. He is an avid fisherman and hiker. Recently, Dean and his wife, Maureen, have become entranced by the birds on the Texas coast. They were introduced to bird-watching by coauthor Chris Mathews and his wife Kate—an unintended consequence of writing textbooks!

 

Spencer J. Anthony-Cahill is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Western Washington University (WWU), Bellingham, WA. Spencer earned his B.A. in chemistry from Whitman College, and his Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. His graduate work, in the laboratory of Peter Schultz, focused on the biosynthetic incorporation of unnatural amino acids into proteins. Spencer was an NIH postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Bill DeGrado (then at DuPont Central Research), where he worked on de novo peptide design and the prediction of the tertiary structure of the HLH DNA-binding motif. He then worked for five years as a research scientist in the biotechnology industry, developingrecombinant hemoglobin as a treatment for acute blood loss. In 1997, Spencer decided to pursue his long-standing interest in teaching and moved to WWU, where he is today. In 2012 Spencer was recognized by WWU with the Peter J. Elich Award for Excellence in Teaching. Research in the Anthony-Cahill laboratory is directed at the protein engineering and structural biology of oxygen-binding proteins. The primary focus is on circular permutation of human b-globin as a means of developing a single-chain hemoglobin with desirable therapeutic properties as a blood replacement.

 

Outside the classroom and laboratory, Spencer is a great fan of the outdoors—especially the North Cascades and southeastern Utah, where he has often backpacked, camped, climbed, and mountain biked. He also plays electric bass (poorly) in a local blues–rock band and teaches Aikido in Bellingham.

 

Christopher K. Mathews is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry at Oregon State University. He earned his B.A. in chemistry from Reed College (1958) and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Washington (1962). He served on the faculties of Yale University and the University of Arizona from 1963 until 1978, when he moved to Oregon State University as Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, a position he held until 2002. His major research interest is the enzymology and regulation of DNA precursor

metabolism and the intracellular coordination between deoxyribonucleotide synthesis and DNA replication. From 1984 to 1985, Dr. Mathews was an Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Fellow at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and in 1994–1995 he held the Tage Erlander Guest Professorship at Stockholm University.

 

Dr. Mathews has published about 185 research papers, book chapters, and reviews dealing with molecular virology, metabolic regulation, nucleotide enzymology, and biochemical genetics. From 1964 until 2012 he was principal investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and the Army Research Office. He is the author of Bacteriophage Biochemistry (1971) and coeditor of Bacteriophage T4 (1983) and Structural and Organizational Aspects of Metabolic Regulation (1990). He was lead author of four editions of

Biochemistry, a textbook for majors and graduate students. His teaching experience includes undergraduate, graduate, and medical school biochemistry courses. He has backpacked and floated the mountains and rivers,

respectively, of Oregon and the Northwest. As an enthusiastic birder he has served as President of the Audubon Society of Corvallis and is President of the Great Basin Society, which operates the Malheur Field

Station in eastern Oregon.

The Hanen Centre, a charitable organization, helps young children with or at risk for language delays communicate to the best of their abilities by developing books, videos, and programs for parents, educators and other important people in children’s lives.

About the Author Fern Sussman, BA, DSPA, resides in Toronto, Ontario where she is program co-ordinator for More Than Words, The Hanen Program for Families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. She has more than 25 years experience working with families of young children who have communication challenges as well as the children themselves. Ms. Sussman developed the More Than Words Program for the Hanen Centre. The program teaches parents how to structure everyday activities, such as getting dressed or playing with toys, to help their child learn to communicate.

In addition to being the author of the parent guidebook, More Than Words, based on the content of the program, Ms. Sussman and wrote and directed an accompanying teaching videotape. Fern Sussman speaks on the Hanen approach to helping children with autism communicate and conducts training programs for Speech Language Pathologists and other professionals all over the world. This is a beautiful book from one of my favorite restaurants. If you haven't been to Gjelina (or either of its two other incarnations) in Venice, California, be sure to go if you are ever in the area. I'm especially fond of Gjelina Take Away which has great sandwiches, salads, and more. This book really captures the artisanal quality of their food. I actually bought this for my niece who is a vegetarian and there is plenty in this book for her to make for herself.

This cookbook has absolutely blown me away. The photos are spectacular and the layout is thoughtful; almost all recipes occupy one page while the facing page is the corresponding photo, making the recipes simple to follow while cooking. The writing is concise and interesting, the recipes are explicitly written, there's a substantial range of flavors and dishes covered, and most importantly - the end results are amazing. [I've posted a list of the recipes at the end of my review.]I have never been to Gjelina, nor had I even heard of it when I ordered the cookbook, but it seemed like the sort of food that I would enjoy - homemade pizza, pasta, roasted vegetables, delicious but not complicated desserts. I wasn't sure where to start, so this cookbook lay around my house for a while, but once I tried the chickpea kale stew, I was completely hooked. I cannot stop cooking dishes from this cookbook. So far, I've made the chickpea stew (it works almost as nicely with canned chickpeas if you are feeling lazy), roasted cauliflower, charred Brussels sprouts with bacon, kale-fennel salad, pomodoro sauce, pizza pomodoro, roasted chicken with braised kale, kabocha squash olive oil cake, and the show-stopping chocolate tart. Every recipe I have tried has been pure gold. I was excited just reading about this cookbook, but now that it’s here, I know I’m not going to be cooking out of it much. It’s not really a home cook’s book, unless you’re a person with a lot of time on your hands, willing to order ingredients online or do some serious hoofing to find them locally. There are some simple recipes for sides and starters, but once you hit the entrees, your ingredient list may range from 12 to 20 items. Most ingredients are accessible enough, but then there’s those ‘add a tablespoon each of tomato confit, garlic confit, and some other confit’ - each confit which requires 6 to 8 ingredients and take 45 minutes to make a cup and a half of something that will hold in your fridge for three days. And there’s the cheese you could get from the artisianal cheesemaker down the block, if you have one, or the heirloom gardener for that certain something, and the pomegranate molasses or wheat berries or…oh, hell. Where do you get this stuff?!I don’t fault the writer or recipes; they are clearly presented and executable. They do state up front that they spike their dishes with all sorts of pickled and flavor-packed confits, which is totally practical for a restaurant - not so much for my family of 3.

I'm cookbook-obsessive, and my stack from this season is literally over 2 feet high. I keep being disappointed by chef-driven books that use ridiculous ingredients in recipes that no normal person would do. Don't get me wrong, I love challenging and inspirational books, but quite frankly many of this genre of books is not inspirational because they aren't unique enough to warrant that title. But enough about the other books that I don't like.I have never heard of Gjelina and so I have never eaten there (what's up with the crazy negative review - if you want every recipe, go get a job there). The narrative was interesting and entertaining. EVERY ingredient is accessible - there are a small handful of items that are seasonal or only going to found at your better markets, but in general, you'll be able to find the stuff or get a decent substitution. The recipes are doable and well-written for the average cook, but interesting enough for all levels to find exciting. And the photography is rich and lush. Lots and lots of recipes. A well done book!

We recently moved back from LA to the East Coast (don't get me started...) and one of the things we miss most is Gjelina/Gjusta. I got this as a gift for my boyfriend, but it has really turned out to be a gift to both of us. We try to cook something from it at least once a week, and it has been so fun to recreate some of the dishes we miss the most. The photography is beautiful and the book is well written and easy to follow. Favorite so far has been the brussels sprouts with bacon and dates -- definitely put it on your "to make" list. If only it included a plane ticket back to LA and a seat on the Gjelina patio *cry face emoji*

We’ve been to the restaurant many times, and now we can replicate their dishes in our own wood fired pizza oven. The recipes are not complicated but require some planning. Everything tastes great. We are vegetarians and found a lot of great ideas.
