Review

Praise for Previous Work: "A genre buster with an engaging prose style, Nelson interweaves psychoanalysis, personal memoir and true-crime tidbits into a darkly intelligent page-turner." -Time Out New York "Very rarely does a book come along that combines such extraordinary lyricism and ethical precision with the sense that the author is writing for her very life ... Nelson refuses complacency and pushes further into the unknown." -Annie Dillard

I bought this book with very little knowledge about its contents and topic. I ended up reading "Bluets" in one sitting. I loved it. It is a book I will refer back to again and again. Nelson weaves the numbered poems beautifully together. (What at first feels like a disjointed series of poems finds a natural flow.) Nelson balances between calculated non-fiction and raw personal anecdotes in the same poem. Nelson is a genius. A GENIUS. If you are feeling heartbroken- read "Bluets". If you are feeling lonely- read "Bluets". The book won't give you advice on how to deal with pain, but it will make you feel less alone.

It is difficult to pick one word and build an entire essay out of it, even more difficult to turn that essay into a book. Maggie Nelson does not only make the reader see the world "blue" in an entirely different light, but she also analyzes her relationships, personal struggles, and overall life in terms of the color blue. Although Nelson's story can be depressing, her lyrical use of language makes the reader want to keep trekking through her struggles. For aspiring writers, Bluets is a great read because of Nelson's use of small vignettes, as well as her poetic language. Bluets is a great template to use to think about your own writing through a different lens, or one focus. I recommend it to those who have gone through deep emotional struggle(s), aspiring creative writers, or poetry-readers.

Love, longing, joy, sadness, questioning, celebration, observation, acceptance, desire. All rinsed in blue. A mountain of fleeting bits of blue, discards, found, considered. A small book to be read in a single sitting. A small book to be picked at and pondered, under a blue sky, bit by bit, along the banks of a never-the-same river. Blue water or perhaps blue green or blue gray. A fleck of lapis, skin dyed indigo. Bluets creased and bent in the back pocket of my jeans.

This extraordinary book is one of those gems, a raw and vivid piece of Lapis lazuli, that I’m inclined to say very little about so as to leave it all for you to discover. Told in numbered fragments, this biblio-bijou is many things. It’s a memoir, philosophical and emotional meditation, and a scientific study of Nelson’s lifelong love affair and obsession with the color blue, all of which are interwoven with her efforts to navigate intense heartbreak, ongoing longing and existential isolation, and the life-altering injury of a dear friend. This makes it the book sound like a very heavy read, and indeed it had me in tears throughout, but its format keeps it from ever feeling punishing. Perhaps it’s also part of the enigmatic magic of the color blue.

I love this book. It is nonfiction, and comprises a series of small, numbered writings. They're more similar to Nietzsche's aphorisms in size--that is, they can be a sentence or two, or fill a few pages--but they are affirming, profound, and provocative. What are they about? Ostensibly, the colour blue. The entire book comprises reflections on the colour blue--its symbolism, its place in the spectrum of light, its manifestations as moods and states of being, its place in literature and music. The writing is brilliant. Maggie Nelson, whose most recent book, THE ARGONAUTS, is a tour de force, has such a fantastic style. Her writing evoked feelings in me as her writing placed a series of sensory experiences in my mind, each of which was evoked by what she was writing about. This is a work of philosopy, of aesthetic theory, of cultural criticism, a meditation on what it means to be alive and human, all creatively told by writing about the colour blue. At first glance, it may sound like another form of navel gazing, but that would be a misreading of what's going on. This is a book about the human condition, one that Nelson writes about with style and aplomb.

This is simply outstanding prose poetry, full of mystery and association that builds and revolves around this central color right to the last section. There is so much here that's rich and lovely. The language is truly compelling.

Most amazing nonfiction read I've had in a very long time. Interweaves a love for blue, a lost love, and a terrible disabling car accident of a friend. All in 200 plus numbered paragraphs. I carry this book around with me. Open it up just to read a random paragraph. It's a book you could (and I will) read over and over again.

One of my favorite collections of prose. Little lush vignettes make up this collection that all refer to the color blue or a state of “blue-ness.” Worth the read. You’ll come back to it again and again.

Review

“This book focuses on Glenn Bray’s trove of comic art, but his idiosyncratic collector’s eye takes in all kinds of cultural detritus: girlie pinups and rock posters, pro wrestling and movie monsters. Mr. Bray started collecting comics originals in 1965, and Blighted is a gallery-like Who’s Who of underground, aboveground and no-ground cartoonists: Harvey Kurtzman and R. Crumb, Virgil Finlay and Gary Panter, George Herriman and Chris Ware. It also shows how an eccentric yet passionate eye can change the way we think about art.” - Dana Jennings, The New York Times“The Blighted Eye is a massive book ...[that] represents the tip of a comic art iceberg. ... I hope a second volume is in the works.” - Mark Frauenfelder, Wink Books

The last couple of years have seen a number of definitive books on 20th century comic book and strip art greats such as Daniel Clowes, Jaime Hernandez, Jack Davis. The practice of having the art newly photographed directly from the originals is thankfully becoming more common, as it puts the reader much closer to the experience of viewing the actual art (a rare opportunity, needless to say). But whereas the afore-mentioned books convey the experience of being at a gallery showing of one artist, this book celebrating the collection of Glenn Bray has the distinction of making you feel like you're strolling through the Louvre of Underground, Outsider and Counter Culture comic art! There are generous helpings of great examples by the likes of alternative press giants like Crumb, Panter, Wolverton, Clowes, Rory Hayes, Robert Williams, Drew Friedman, alongside greats from strips, EC comics, and funny animal art like Harvey Kurtzman and Carl Barks -- ALL UNDER ONE ROOF! (not to mention dozens of artists I was otherwise unfamiliar with, who now deserve further investigation; even Freddie Blassie gets page space devoted to him!). It may seem like it shouldn't work, but it does: the book is over 400 pages so manages to give everyone their due. It's smartly organized, and the reproduction of the art is top notch as mentioned. If you're interested in alternative press or underground art or comic book art in general, I think you'll find the book to be an achievement as I have. Hats off to Fantagraphics Books for putting this together (and doing it right!), and their continued dedication to preserving this great art form in their various archival editions.

A solid collection, novel prints.

Beautiful, strange...

Great. It has my son in it and that is why I bought it. he told me about it. Great

This book gave me a major boner......I mean...um....this book GIVES me a major boner! Glenn, can I have your collection when you die?

I love this book! "The Blighted Eye" showcases Glenn Bray's extensive collection of original comic art by my friends, cartoonists Rick Griffin, Robert Crumb, Spain Rodriguez, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams and many more. Glenn includes photos of his visits to Rick's home and their trip to Peru and Easter Island with Robert Williams… and ton's more. Its about a 20 pound book (just a guess here) that lists for $100 but amazon delivers it to your door for $63.64 or about $3.00 a pound… just think of it as answering the question "Where's the Beef?" because its all Killer and no Filler.

If a 10 is the highest possible rating, this is a 100--all the way. It's not just a book, it's an event... a happening. If books were celebrity actors, The Blighted Eye is the equivalent of a Bogart, a Pacino, a DeNiro. It's one of those rare booksthat I keep returning to again, and again, and again.

Wonderful art book, hitting on the type of art I love. Great to see this type of art in this format.

An Image of God: The Catholic Struggle with EugenicsBy Sharon M. Leon

During the first half of the twentieth century, supporters of the eugenics movement offered an image of a racially transformed America by curtailing the reproduction of “unfit” members of society. Through institutionalization, compulsory sterilization, the restriction of immigration and marriages, and other methods, eugenicists promised to improve the population—a policy agenda that was embraced by many leading intellectuals and public figures. But Catholic activists and thinkers across the United States opposed many of these measures, asserting that “every man, even a lunatic, is an image of God, not a mere animal."
In An Image of God, Sharon Leon examines the efforts of American Catholics to thwart eugenic policies, illuminating the ways in which Catholic thought transformed the public conversation about individual rights, the role of the state, and the intersections of race, community, and family. Through an examination of the broader questions raised in this debate, Leon casts new light on major issues that remain central in American political life today: the institution of marriage, the role of government, and the separation of church and state. This is essential reading in the history of religion, science, politics, and human rights.

Review
"If there is a story long overdue for telling, surely it is the story of how and why the Catholic Church and its faithful stood against the eugenics movement at a time when just about everyone else had gotten on the pro-eugenics bandwagon. In An Image of God, Sharon M. Leon tells the story and tells it exceptionally well. The book is worth reading not only for what it teaches us about the past, but also for the lessons it imparts at a time when eugenics ideologies are being revived and presented in new rhetorical garb."
(Robert P. George Princeton University)

“Passionately argued, engagingly written, and based on extensive research, An Image of God will be essential reading for historians of eugenics and students of Catholic activism in the United States. With this book, Sharon M. Leon fills a huge gap in the scholarly literature.” (Molly Ladd-Taylor York University)

"Sharon M. Leon's An Image of God deftly explores how modern American Catholic anti-eugenicists survived their own conflicts and stumbles to secure a substantial moral achievement for Catholic social teaching in a nation still often doubtful about Catholicism itself. This book is deeply researched and affectingly written; few books better illustrate the maturation of twentieth-century American Catholicism, especially in science, and the compromised choices that men and women seeking good often faced in their real and deficient world."
(Jon Butler Yale University)

“This scholarly but very readable study cuts across several categories: the religious and legal aspects of sterilization; moral and ethical aspects of eugenics; the interplay of science and religion; and US and Catholic history in the first half of the twentieth century. . . . The author’s writing is clear, persuasive, and nuanced; her meticulous research, drawn from both original and secondary sources, is deep and thoroughly documented. . . . A valuable addition. . .” (Catholic Library World)

“Popular commentary on the history of eugenics in America often operates at the level of cartoon, with anti-Darwinian religionists of many stripes posed against the forces of scientific materialism. Leon’s book provides an antidote to that kind of ahistorical polemic by showing in textured detail how the Catholic hierarchy as well as the laity struggled with the many-faceted seductions of eugenics.” (Catholic Historical Review)

“No scholar has done more to document the relations between the US eugenics movement and the Roman Catholic Church than Leon. . . . Leon’s account of how the Church played a large role in defeating the eugenics movement is persuasive and eye-opening.” (History of Science Society)

“Rejecting the oversimplified and inaccurate trope of inherent Catholic hostility to science (though that language was sometimes used by eugenicists to describe their opponents), Leon shows how American Catholics mobilized against state laws permitting involuntary sterilization, highlighting abuses in existing laws, and calling into question some of the scientific claims about the hereditary nature of so-called feeble-mindedness. . . . An Image of God gives the reader some useful insight into how the historiography of eugenics and its opposition might need to be reconsidered. Perhaps its greater contribution is to our understanding of American Catholicism as an emergent political force in the early twentieth century, a development that has continued to shape the discussion of religion, biology, and politics in the twenty-first-century United States.” (Journal of the History of Medicine)

“Essential reading for researchers with a specialist interest in Catholic opinions about bioethical issues, especially in twentieth-century America.” (American Historical Review)

“Adding depth and complexity to the history of eugenics in the United States, Leon’s work is a valuable contribution to the growing literature regarding Catholicism and science in the twentieth century.” (British Journal for the History of Science)
